My niece, Ella Eun Ae, has finally been welcomed into the world! At first I thought it was a typo, but her middle name is Korean. I'm glad my brother is paying tribute to his original roots. Having all been adopted, my siblings and I sometimes forget we are Asian.
Living in New York unfortunately means I will not get to see my niece very often. I wanted to give her something very unique and personal, instead of the same old baby gifts that will be tossed away in a couple of years. Of course I mean a painting. I had to come up with something different than my usual style. Also, it had to be appropriate for a baby room, but not baby-ish like bunnies and bows. Inspired by artist Sarah Morris and her use of shapes, I used a series of circles to create an apple pattern.
My job as auntie is to nourish her creative side - and be a bad influence.
